Do you know that stories are light? The students at Rosemont Elementary School do. After reading The Tale of Desperaux, the fourth and fifth grade students can tell you all about the light and the dark. The unit began with a discussion of heroes and what makes a hero. Each teacher displayed a board in his/her room for the students to bring in pictures of their heroes to share with the class. While reading the book, the students covered many of the Georgia Performance Standards. The standards include story elements (character, setting , plot and theme); figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification and onomatopoeia) and extending vocabulary activities. After the students finished reading the book, they showed what they had learned through a performance task. The task they were given was to create a scene from the book. They needed to include the setting, characters and dialogue from their favorite part of the book. The scenes were displayed in the fourth and fifth grade wing for all the school to enjoy.
